Sclerotherapy

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a treatment designed to get rid of spider veins. Spider veins, otherwise known as telangiectasias or sunburst varicosities, are small thin veins that appear near the surface of the skin. These unsightly vein clusters commonly appear on the thighs, calves, and ankles, and approximately half of the adult female population suffer from this common, and treatable, cosmetic problem.

Sclerotherapy can also treat varicose veins, which are larger and more noticeable than spider veins. Varicose veins can be more than unsightly; they can be painful, causing burning, aching, swelling and nighttime cramps.

Sclerotherapy functions by injecting a sclerosing solution, which safely collapses the unsightly veins and causes them to fade from view.

What can I expect if I receive a sclerotherapy procedure at Skin Essentials?

While sclerotherapy has been popular in Europe for decades, the treatment has only recently made its debut in the United States. This is why we encourage you to receive your sclerotherapy treatment with a Skin Essentials @ bod:evolve expert, where our capable and professionally distinguished doctors and nurses have had the appropriate experience with sclerotherapy treatments.

A sclerotherapy treatment takes between 15-45 minutes to perform. The pain is minimal, and will feel much like any other medical injection. When the sclerosing agent is injected into the affected area you may experience a slight burning sensation. Approximately, one injection is administered for every inch of the vein. After the treatment, you can expect some bruising and redness, which will diminish. The treated areas will take some time to heal, so patients may prefer not to wear shorts until the treated area heals. Other issues of post-sclerotherapy care will be explained to you by our Skin Essentials provider during your initial consultation.

As a prospective patient, what should I know about sclerotherapy?

  • Varicose veins can be painful, and have been related to several serious venous disorders.
  • While sclerotherapy can treat varicose veins, surgery is sometimes necessary if the patient suffers from a severe case of varicose veins.
  • It's important to remember that both varicose veins and spider veins are a common problem, to which several factors contribute.
  • Varicose veins may be due to heredity, pregnancy, weight gain or daily activities. Many people suffer from this cosmetic problem, which can be easily treated with sclerotherapy.
